Churches Hops
Bataan's oldest churches date to the 1500s — coral-stone walls, retablos older than the country itself, and parish priests who'll happily tell you which beam was rebuilt after which earthquake. This hop is gentle: seven churches, slow pace, no rush.

- Full day (10 AM start works)

The route
7 stops, in order. Skip what you want — the locals do too.
- 1
St. Dominic of Guzman Parish
Abucay1587 founding. The oldest church in Bataan, the bell tower predates most of the country's standing structures.
- 2
St. Joseph Cathedral
BalangaThe seat of the diocese. Bright, restored, and the surrounding plaza is a good place to pause for halo-halo.
- 3
Our Lady of the Pillar Parish
PilarSmall, devout, often quiet. The parish records here go back to 1801; ask if you have ancestors from the area.
- 4
Lunch — town plaza
OraniStep out for an hour. Bibingka, kakanin, and whatever's on the food cart parked by the plaza.
- 5
Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary
OraniLate-1700s parish, original brick visible inside the bell tower. A 10-minute stop unless mass is starting.
- 6
St. Catherine of Alexandria
SamalOften missed because it's off the main highway. Worth the detour — the retablo is intact and beautifully lit in the afternoon.
Local tip: Light comes through the west window around 4 PM.
- 7
St. John the Baptist Parish
DinalupihanNorthern endpoint. Newer than the others, but the surrounding town is a good place to wrap with dinner.
Before you go
- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered at the older parishes.
- Most churches accept donations rather than entrance fees.
- Avoid Sunday 7–11 AM unless you're attending mass.
